Rhodes:
A hot holiday playground for the young
in places like Faliraki, while the less energetic head for quiet
Kalithea, and though there are plenty of resorts in-between these two
extremes, very little of the authentic Rhodes remains - for that you
must head for the hills.
Most of the original coastal villages
have developed into brash, bustling and often boisterous holiday towns
with little or no character but packed with modern amenities.
The island's ancient history has been
excavated, preserved and packaged for the tourists. See below for more
information.

- Rhodes Town is a
magnet for those seeking a bit of culture and most head straight for
the Palace of the Grand Masters which is housed in
the medieval walled city. The fantastic treasures and sights within
the temples and museums are too numerous to list here and would take
a day or more to explore. Put it top of your list.
- Dotted around the island are
monasteries and ruins. By far the most popular ancient site is the Acropolis
overlooking Lindos which dates back to
200BC. Among it's previous visitors were Alexander the Great and
Helen of Troy. Take a donkey ride to the top ... it can be a
grueling walk.
- Those seeking some natural history
head for the beautiful Valley of the Butterflies -
Pataloudes. Set in a stunning wooded valley, it is the home of
hundreds of thousands of Qadrina butterflies.
- Among the more modern manmade
attractions is a water park at Faliraki, while for
golfers there's an 18-hole course near Afandou.
