Lanzarote:
'Lanza-grotty' was the popular clich for travel writers in the 80's
when their favourite sport was taking a swipe at Puerto del Carmen's
rather tatty image.
Commercialisation seemed to be getting too much of a grip like it did
on neighbouring Tenerife and Gran Canaria until the authorities called a
halt to it.
Now, perhaps with the exception of Puerto del Carmen's 'colourful'
promenade, the island has managed to embrace tourism and nature.
In 2005 Puerto del Carmen was identified by Spains Government as
one of three deteriorating tourist areas alongside the Costa
del Sol and Majorcas Playa del Palma needing a major revamp in
order to guarantee their future prosperity.
A general note about the Canaries; cockroaches are common inhabitants
of the islands and frequent visitors to apartments - especially
properties situated
the ground floor.
Weather:
Hot during the summer with a bracing wind in exposed places. During
the hottest months the wind can be most welcome; in the winter, however
you may need to find shelter. Also, between October and April expect
more in the way of cloud and rain, and a milder climate.

Enjoy Lanzarote with a good guide book |

- Make sure a trip to the fascinating 'Mountains of Fire'
is at the top of your itinerary. This smouldering volcanic landscape
is a staggering reminder of the power of nature which erupted more
than 270 years ago. Cars are only allowed up to a certain point and
you'll need to pay an admission charge to go further where a guide
will demonstrate 'the burning bush', etc. The heat is also harnessed
by a mountain restaurant for its huge barbeque.
- For more natural history take a trip to the famous volcanic caves;
Cueva de los Verdes which form a labyrinth of
tunnels underground. Guided tours daily.
- Boat trips to neighbouring island, Fuerteventura show
another of the Canary's natural wonders; the incredible sand dunes
at Corralejo.
- An 18 hole golf course and a waterpark
are both situated near Costa Teguise.
- Arricife is only recommended for true shop-a-holics,
the town itself is rather dull.
