Bulgaria:
Bulgaria has been a favourite destination with Greeks and Russians
for years and is now just beginning to welcome holidaymakers from
Britain and beyond.
Now firmly establishing itself in the mainstream holiday brochures
there is one blindingly obvious reason why Bulgaria is becoming more and
more popular...IT'S CHEAP!.
OK...so the scenery is spectacular and the coastline is rugged and
much of the country is covered with untouched forests. The biggest lure
of the past year-or-so has been the pull of a destination where
holidaymakers get more for their money.
Other more traditional holiday hotspots such as Spain are becoming
increasingly expensive because of the euro, whereas Bulgaria is still
loyal to its own currency, the Lev.
The development of tourism began during the communist years and the
construction of the majority of the hotels and apartment blocks in
Bulgaria reflects this. More recently some of the bigger hotel chains
have moved in and put the older deveolpments in the shade.
Important Information:
- The Lev currency can only be purchased in Bulgaria and it cannot
be taken out. Credit cards are still NOT widely used in Bulgaria.
- Flight-only passengers to Bulgaria are required to complete an
immigration card which is issued on arrival and must be submitted to
a police station during the visit.
- Road conditions outside the resorts and poor or non-existant
direction signs makes car hire a little risky.
Flight time from UK: Approx 3
hours.
Language: Bulgarian.
Time Difference: GMT + 2
Currency: Lev.
